An interesting and tempting gathering of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards here stars Wayne Gretzky’s coveted rookie card, with card #18 achieving merited NM 7 status upon examination by PSA. The visually appealing specimen is without white corner specks, while two thin blue lines on the back that run through the puck at the bottom of the cartoon are believed to be a sign of OPC’s first print run that season. There are then 395 accompanying raw cards housed in a binder, with the majority of them mirroring the Gretz RC (or edging it), including keys Howe, Hull and Bossy, although some intermittent corner touches are spotted – expect some EX-MT and EX-MT+ cards as well, along with NM+ and better. Checklists and team checklists are all unmarked, with touches/wear at four corners sending the Oilers (and Jets) logo/checklists to EX or EX+. However, if you come out as high bidder, you’ll have the option of making a set that involves up to 50 graded cards, with 48 PSA-slabbed extras (and one SGC job) joining Wayne a possibility. The lowdown on the alluring graded batch is as follows. Oilers and Jets logo/checklists were deemed worthy of MINT 9 status and are followed by four at NM-MT+ 8.5, including 163-Whalers logo and 175-Howe, along with 140-Barber and 241-Linseman RC. And check out the roster of 32 NM-MT 8s; 13 team photo/checklists, three rookie cards and the rest all Hall of Famers. Leading the contingent of 8s are Bossy (second-year), Hull, Dryden and Lafleur, with RCs of 191-Simmer, 206-Smith and 281-Millen also in the mix. Completing the intriguing PSA-encapsulated portion is 146-Tonelli RC at NM+ 7.5 and nine at NM 7 (team cards of the Canadiens and Nordiques and two others, four HOFers and 386-Melrose RC), with 160-Dionne graded NM/MT 8 by SGC. The Great One and company offer numerous options and opportunities – you’re in for a pleasant time when these arrive – even the overall condition (very few scratches) of the PSA holders is impressive!
