Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Earning the second of his 2,415 career hits in just his second major league game on April 18, 1951 vs the Boston Red Sox, iconic superstar Mickey Mantle would also offer up a sacrifice bunt in the contest as well as earn his first walk, and we offer a ticket stub from the historic game that witnessed The Mick don the prestigious pinstripes of the New York Yankees on just the second occasion. Hailing from the same consignor and the ideal companion piece to the Mantle first-game stub Classic Auctions sold in October of 2020 that serves as the highest amount ever paid for a ticket stub, this fresh-to-the-hobby specimen was recently graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, with the lower box seat listing a price of $3.00, with the date of “April 18, 1951” (the day after making his debut, on April 17th). The paramount stub shows light handling wear, and is one of only two stubs to be graded by PSA, with no full tickets graded, with this example serving as the highest graded (the other stub has been graded “Authentic”). Accompanying the important treasure, there is a Royal Bank of Canada purchaser’s receipt dated “Jan 22, 1951” with “New York Yankees” and “$6.00” handwritten, and we believe the receipt was for the Mantle first game stub we sold in October as well as this stub (each has a face value of $3.00).
