Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Symbolic of the battle between the rising Nazism in Germany and the somewhat troubled democracy of the United States, American fighter Joe Louis fought German boxer Max Schmeling in their first of two bouts in 1936, with the swastika triumphant over the stars and stripes, with the Black Uhlan of the Rhine knocking-out the Brown Bomber in the twelfth round. This lot offers a collection of 12 vintage boxing photos featuring the historic bout (one of the photos was produced for the 1935 film The Irish in Us starring James Cagney), accompanied by a circa 1930s Harvard football pin with attached ribbons and melon-style tin football. Seven of the photos are trimmed from their 8” x 10” dimensions to slightly smaller sizes, with four of the photos sporting text along the base of “Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling – Yankee Stadium – June 1936” (two of the photos featuring Louis including an example vs another black boxer are not from the Schmeling bout). The group shows heavy wear including pinholes and creases, with each “rolled”. The Harvard pin is 1 ¼” in diameter and shows light wear, with “Made in Japan” stamped to the detailed melon football which is attached by two stained ribbons.
