Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
For the last time, the Bruins, Black Hawks and Rangers comprised Topps’ hockey card issue in 1963-64, with the splendid condition of the stack here almost prompting us to leave “mid” out of the title. Striking are the immaculate surfaces pretty much throughout, with no evidence whatsoever of any coin ever being rubbed on any of the backs – nice. NM-or-better examples appear to be the majority and most that don’t make it to NM are only a slight notch or two below at EX-MT or EX-MT+. The key Bobby Hull card is among the EX-MT+ entries, with a type of diagonal warping observed, similar to numerous others, with some more obvious. Jacques Plante (EX-MT+) and Stan Mikita (NM) contribute, with the Rangers (NM) the condition leader among the team cards and joined by the Bruins (EX-MT) and Black Hawks, the latter a condition exception with two edge notches. The set’s finale, the (unmarked) #66-Checklist, is well-centered, crease-free and EX. Light toning down the left border of Eddie Johnston’s (#2) rookie card (EX-MT+) is to note, while 46-Villemure RC curiously measures markedly shorter than the rest. An EX-MT #1-Schmidt card and intermittent slight diamond cuts are also noteworthy. Some definite submission candidates or simply a very attractive colorful Topps set are/is deserving of considerable contemplation.
