Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
A complete set of the very first hockey cards, available to consumers in packages of cigarettes well over 100 years ago and offered to serious collectors here constitutes a hobby happening, with several of the men responsible for making early professional hockey a happening featured amid the three dozen well-preserved darlings. The eight cards depicting Hockey Hall of Fame members that recently were assessed by PSA are led condition-wise by four at VG-EX 4, including, remarkably, the first two numbered cards, (1-Frank Patrick and 2-Percy LeSueur), along with the #8 card of Art Ross and 28-Paddy Moran. The #12 Ross card received a mark of VG+ 3.5, while those of three hockey immortals in their Renfrew Millionaires sweaters complete the encapsulated segment; 15-Fred “Cyclone” Taylor and 26-Lester Patrick are slabbed VG 3, with a similar-in-appearance 36-Newsy Lalonde entry lowered to GOOD 2 by discoloration spots on the reverse. The similar and rather uniform condition of the raw representatives is an attribute and they too are a treat to hold and behold, their mostly crease-free state, sometimes remarkably clean surfaces and deep rich colors striking and appealing. All cards are considered rookie cards, with other Hall of Fame contributors being, (in numerical order), 3-Roberts, 7-Walsh, 10-Hyland, 14-Dunderdale, 16-Cattarinich (builder), 17-Stuart, 20-Russell, 21-Laviolette, 22-Hern, 23-Pitre, 30-Johnson, 33-Marshall and 35-Marshall. You can anticipate a vast majority of examples in the VG, VG+ and VG-EX realm. We spot but five cards with a crease/creasing that does not significantly reduce the eye appeal; 14-Dunderdale, 25-Bernier, 32-McNamara, 30-Johnston and 33-Marshall. Two (bottom) corner indentations affect 23-Pitre, while 22-Hern measures narrower than the rest, with 20-Russell and 29-Toms seemingly short. All backs are problem-free, with varying degrees of toning observed. In short, a captivating and inviting ensemble that is worthy of substantial consideration.
