Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

Legendary pre-war performers in encapsulated form headline this 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee Series “A” set of 48, the company’s first hockey card issue, with all but five considered rookie cards. Two of the set’s top four cards picture hockey icons Howie Morenz and King Clancy and recently received VG 3 grades at PSA headquarters, while key rookie cards of Eddie Shore and Charlie Conacher are slabbed GOOD 2. Also in new PSA holders are RCs of Busher Jackson (VG 3) and goaltender Roy Worters (VG-EX 4). Cards in older PSA holders are, in our opinion, an indication of how grading has evolved(!) over the years, with 2-Lamb, 9-Oliver (partially rounded corners) and 29-Himes at EX 5, 41-McInenly at EX-MT 6 and, most curiously, 37-Murdoch at VG-EX 4 despite two areas of paper loss on the front. On to the raw elements we go, with sharp examples of commoners 22-Mantha and 44-McVeigh EX in our book, while notables with VG to VG-EX characteristics are 32-Day and RCs of Hall of Famers 6-Stewart, 10-Horner, 13-Bailey, 15-Hainsworth and 27-Weiland. VG-or-better cards dominate the rest, with sometimes a touch of soiling or evidence (discolored corner regions) of once having been held in an OPC or other album lowering others, with however not many obvious/unsightly creases observed. A bit of staining on the back and a diamond cut are to mention with regard to 8-Dit Clapper RC, while exceptions include creased cards of 14-Patterson, 28-Bourgeault and 39-Ching Johnson, with a small (top) edge tear in 12-Joe Primeau’s RC and low grade cards of 25-Finnegan, 46-Leduc and 47-Wasnie. Not all cards measure the exact same size, like we’ve encountered in the past, with five markedly short; #s 1-Cox, 20, 21, 24-Howe and 26. We believe we’ve covered the pertinent aspects, with our images informing of the different background colors. Pre-war material sure is captivating – good luck with this splendid opportunity.
