Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

A tempting set for collectors of vintage football cards is on the auction block here, with Topps turning to the American Football League in 1964 after losing the rights to produce NFL cards to rival Philadelphia Gum. The result was a 176-card issue that features numerous short prints (88!), desirable rookie cards (among 78 total RCs), alluring star cards and a colorful swell design, with the condition of this ensemble rather inviting indeed. We spot but six cards with an obvious crease, with VG-EX, VG-EX+ and EX cards coming around most often and combining for the majority. EX+ and EX-MT contributors, along with some NMs, are also to come upon, with the lowdown of the key cards as follows. At EX are 30-Jack Kemp SP, 121-Maynard, 125-Snell RC, 139-Flores SP and 155-Alworth, with 3-Buoniconti at notch higher at EX+. Coming in at VG-EX or VG-EX+ are 31-Lamonica RC, 92-Buchanen RC, 96-Dawson SP, 148-Otto SP, 152-Williamson SP, 159-Hadl RC and 169-Mix SP, while a tiny corner creases helps to send 29-Gilchrist SP and 90-Bell RC to VG+. Other notable condition exceptions, at VG, are 1-Addison SP and 68-Blanda SP. Unmarked checklist #82 makes it to EX-MT, with #176 (SP) also unmarked but with corner wear and two small creases (extending from the left edge into the player with the blue uniform) rendering it no better than VG. In our eyes, an attractive, pleasing and infrequently-offered mid-grade set awaits you if you’re the astute high bidder here.
