Well over 1700 cards from both 1979-80 and ’80-81 are up for grabs here and will appeal to dealers, set builders and entrepreneurial hobbyists, with very little handling to report. The keys in our title are led by two Mark Messier rookie cards which we see as NM examples while two Ray Bourque RCs include one similar and one real close at EX-MT+. Three Mike Gartner RCs are in the EX-MT to NM range and two second-year Wayne Gretzky entries are respectively NM and EX+. Wayne appears on 15 other well-known “specials” with however eight of them miscut (#3 x 6), while five League Leaders with Gretz are in the aforementioned range. There is duplication, heavy at times, amid the rest which include multiples of most of the secondary rookie cards, team leader cards, checklists, etc. Cards from both years however shed light on how difficult it is to zero-in on well-centered NM-MT to MINT cards, with some cards seeming to be off-centered every time, and that, even when five, six, seven or more of the same are scrutinized. There’s however plenty of allure in the blue-bordered jobs from ’79-80, with half a dozen Bobby Hulls, two second-year Mike Bossys, unmarked checklists (10) and dozens of unmarked team checklists in the mix, with multiple League Leader cards also present. If we say mostly EX+ to NM, you’ll likely be pleased when coming upon the nicer examples. Again, some miscuts and centering issues affect both the keys and the others, with the ’79-80s exhibiting (side) edge toning/staining due to their storage in lid-less boxes over the years. Way more noticeable when lined up in their boxes and not so much when viewed individually, although small stains intermittently make their way onto the surfaces, usually the back. The ’79-80s have additionally curled a tad more than their ’80-81 counterparts. Thousands of cards to examine await you with these have-had-but-one-owner blasts from the past.
