Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
The legend of one of the premier pre-NHL scoring sensations is brought forth with this captivating image of Joe Malone, the Quebec Bulldogs’ center who led his team to the Stanley Cup the same season that this relic was originally discovered in a pack of cigarettes, scoring 21 times in 18 National Hockey Association games. The Bulldogs then defeated Moncton in two straight games in a best-of-3 challenge to retain the Cup, with Malone contributing five more tallies. “Phantom Joe” rifled 43 goals in 20 NHA games in 1912-13 as Quebec defended its Cup title and was still scoring when the NHL was formed five years later, tallying a record 44 in 20 games with the Canadiens. A respectable low grade specimen of Malone's rookie card is available here, with SGC slabbing card #4 GOOD 2. Creases and rounded corners are evident but no major flaws affect the image of the scoring whiz. Light scuffs and scratches to the SGC holder are to be aware of.
