Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Constructed with squared-off blades, a trait usually found with earlier antique skates from the mid-to-late-19th century, we offer a desirable group of 4 pairs. First, we have a pair of “spring” skates – named for their solid cast design with step pads that push down and cause a spring-type effect and motion, with these sporting most of the original strapping and no visible maker’s marks, with wear throughout. This is followed by a pair with blonde wooden bases and no remaining strapping, with no maker visible, and pitting to the blades and wear to the bases. The third pair are higher quality and remain in wonderful condition and feature beautifully finished bases. Produced by Douglas Rogers – a highly-skilled Connecticut maker - with an 1880s patent date and steel-tempered curled-tip blades, a size “6” is stamped into each underside, with some of the leather strapping remaining for each skate. The final pair may have been produced for a lady – possibly by Union Hardware, and feature wooden bases with intact reinforced ankle supports and considerable leather strapping. The blades show just light wear, with a size “6” stamped into each base. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
