A gentleman’s collection from his childhood up for grabs here will garner interest for its legendary contributors and will be particularly appealing to those of you not all that concerned about condition, although it improves starting with the 1961 entries. Our consignor was surely a Mickey Mantle fan, with several of the Mick involved. Poor is a 1957 example (out of 16 total ‘57s), with a ‘58 All-Star card more respectable but still a P example, joined by three dozen other ‘58s, including 1-Williams (P), 418-Mantle/Aaron (F), a Curt Flood RC (F) and some All-Star card action. Again, a roughed-up Mantle but without writing, holes, tears, etc. from ’59 (out of 80) is bettered by a F-G Willie Mays card and a similar Sparky Anderson rookie. Five dozen ‘60s are headlined by Carl Yastrzemski (P) and Jim Kaat (F) RCs, with 160-Mantle/Boyer also low grade. Most plentiful and interesting are batches from ’61 (270) and ’62 (190), with VG, VG+ and VG-EX cards dominating (some better/worse), with the ‘61s featuring a decent VG 300-Mantle, miscut 475-Mantle MVP (G) and 307-World Series (VG) cards, while 287-Yaz (VG) and the other pictured stars are mostly in the aforementioned VG neighborhood. Two Roberto Clemente cards (VG+, VG) from ’62 carry allure, while Koufax (VG-EX (OC)) and 18-Mantle/Mays (G) are most noteworthy among the other star cards. There’s a little ’62 Post Canadian action (33 cards), with Mantle, Clemente and McCovey poorly cut but still acceptable. The Mick isn’t done yet; cards from ’63 (F)(amid three dozen) and ’64 (VG+)(out of close to 100) help to end off the collection, with our images informing of all the pertinent stars and rookies. Some duplication is observed, especially in ’61 and ’62, with no notable high numbers or SPs spotted. All sorts of fun and possibilities for you when this classic shoebox-like stash (although the cards were stored in binders(!)), is delivered.
