Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

Offering options galore (and rookie cards galore) are complete sets of Parkhurst’s landmark 1951-52 hockey card issue, with the assembly here comprised of alluring elements…galore! We’ll take care of the most important components first, with the rookie cards of Maurice Richard (VG-EX 4) and Terry Sawchuk (VG 3) featuring appealing centering and recently returning from PSA. Also scrutinized was a Gordie Howe RC, with card #66 not meeting minimum size requirement standards and not in a holder. (This designation does not apply to cards that are deemed trimmed or altered but is an indication that the card was cut short or narrow by the company at the time of production. Veteran hobbyists with much ’51-52 Parkie experience are aware that the Howe rookie often measures narrow). We’d say VG or VG+ for Gordie, with corner wear and a tiny crease in the upper left corner the grade-lowering factors. Now then, most notable among the two dozen-plus other encapsulated contributors are Doug Harvey at VG-EX 4 (despite an obvious crease), Bernie Geoffrion at GOOD 2 (due to a side-to-side crease in the statistics region and not affecting the Boomer’s image), and Red Kelly, slabbed GOOD 2 but curiously markedly narrower than the aforementioned graded examples. Condition leaders meriting lofty NM-MT 8 recognition are 6-MacPherson, 8-Masnick and 91-Buller, followed by seven NM 7s; 17-Couture, 19-Henry, 25-Laycoe, 54-Pavelich, 58-Woit, 72-Meeker and 79-Bolton. Three EX-MT+ 6.5s are 13-Reay, 39-Martin and 85-Gardner, with Hall of Famers 5-Olmstead, 47-Lumley and 49-Mosienko joined in the EX-MT 6 pile by 15-McNeil, 27-Sullivan and 98-MacLeod. Completing the graded segment are 104-Rayner (EX+ 5.5), 29-Schmidt and 78-Timgren at VG-EX 4 and 75-Broda at GOOD 2. Amid the striking aspects of the raw rest are the minimal amount of creases observed, the (almost entirely) problem-free backs and the flatness and crispness of numerous entries. Such is the case with EX cards of 52-The Winning Goal and 56-Lindsay, while (a narrower) 1-Lach and 63-Delvecchio are close at VG-EX. Superior-looking than cards graded EX-MT 6 is 86-Kennedy. A majority of the remainder are in the VG-EX to EX range, with lesser and better to be anticipated, along with a few short or narrow specimens. Condition exceptions due to a crease or creases and/or pronounced corner wear are #s 3-Bouchard, 40, 44, 51, 76-Rollins, 94-Stanley and 105-Conacher, while back damage affects 28-Dumart. Five duplicates are bonuses; 29-Schmidt (G+), 54-Pavelich (VG), 59-Leswick (VG), 64-Abel (VG), 86-Kennedy (F) and 91-Buller (VG). A splendid addition to a vintage set collection, upgrades to some of your encapsulated stash and interesting break-up value and inventory possibilities are all to be considered – we know many of you are ciphering/calculating right now.
