Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/2/2022
The most successful club throughout the tenure of the World Hockey Association, the Winnipeg Jets were led by superstar Bobby Hull, and competed in five of the seven Avco Cup finals, winning a trio of championships. Obtained directly from the team by our consignor in the late-1970s, this WHA Jets jersey hails from the mid-1970s and features a chain-stitched team crest, with the Jets last wearing this style in 1976-77. The 1975-76 set also featured matching team crests, but the jerseys that season also sported a 1976 Olympic patch to the shoulder, and with no patch or outline visible on this specimen, it can be dated to the 1976-77 WHA season. The Jets acquired netminder Markus Mattsson in a trade with the Quebec Nordiques during the 1977-78 season on January 18, 1978, and with the jersey showing wear not typical of a goaltender, it was most likely worn by an unknown player during the 1976-77 season and later recycled for Mattsson use in some capacity after he was acquired during the 1977-78 WHA season. A partially-detached and frayed Harv-Al label with handwritten “12” resides along the collar, with the vintage garment styled with the aforementioned team crest with chain-stitched detailing. “35” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Mattsson” heat-pressed to the affixed nameplate in white vinyl. There is no fight strap, with the sleeve and verso numbers correct for the era with no signs of alteration. Showing nice game-use with wear and marks to the material over the front and sleeves, there are also burns near and on the shoulders, with team repairs situated on the sleeves (7) and shoulders (5).
