The Wayne Gretzky rookie card that headlines this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee set was recently examined by KSA and slabbed 6 ENM, with a light ding to the bottom left corner and light wear to the others visible. A white speck in the middle of the right border and some color loss to "EDMONTON" below Wayne's name are also noteworthy. As for the accompanying 395 cards, well, they've been stored individually for decades in thick penny sleeves. After pulling the keys, here's what we can tell you: Similar light corner wear or a little more is observed, with EX, EX+ and EX-MT cards present and Mike Bossy's second-year card lesser at VG-EX. The Oilers team logo/checklist is unmarked and EX, while two of three checklists are unmarked; 237 is EX and 346 VG-EX. One little pen mark is on the back of #131 which exhibits a diamond cut, with all team photo/checklists free of markings. We spot white corner specks on many of the sleeved cards and surmise the average to be EX. The first couple and last cards are among the exceptions and show significant wear. Once again, Wayne and company are always intriguing and merit contemplation.
