Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Examining this near set of 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards leads to the discovery of numerous notable condition factors, with the lowdown as follows: A well-centered, crease-free and attractive Guy Lafleur rookie card is EX+ in our book and leads the “big three” of RCs, with that of Ken Dryden displaying decently but four small, light creases render it no better than VG. Almost miscut and with a couple of dinged corners is the (VG-EX) Marcel Dionne rookie. Although there are crease-free examples that mirror the Lafleur RC to come across (approximately four dozen – mostly 2nd Series cards), what most strikes the examiner are the various amounts of staining/toning that affect some five dozen. A few, like Phil Esposito’s All-Star card, are totally covered, with others affected by small/more subtle (Howe and Beliveau specials, Clarke) or larger (Tony O) brown blotches. And then at times there is a crease or creases that come into play. Difficult to summarize, for sure, with the #111-1st Series Checklist free of unsightly creases and toning but with all boxes filled-in with ink and toning, rounded corners and two creases to mention with the #264-2nd Series Checklist. Bobby Orr (#100)(G) has an obvious two-inch crease but 245-Trophy Winner (VG+) and 251-All-Star (VG-EX) cards are nicer. In short, a real mixed bag awaits the new owner – please check out the key cards and decide if that’ll be you.
*The one (common) card not present is 211-O'Shea.
