Fittingly concluding his Hall of Fame career as a five-time-consecutive Stanley Cup champion, Maurice Richard battled both NHL opponents and the league itself for 18 majestic seasons and earned numerous awards and accolades including 14 All-Star selections as well as the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, in 1947. The Rocket retired in 1960 as the NHL’s all-time goals leader. From the close of his remarkable career, we have a collection of 6 documents relating to Richard’s retirement from the game he loved. First, we have a pair of typed letters on Canadiens letterhead dated September of 1960, with each mentioning the Rocket being placed on the ”Voluntarily Retired List”, signed by Frank J. Selke, followed by an “Application To Be Placed on Voluntarily Retired List” dated June 1, 1960 and signed by Richard. Rounding out the lot, we have a trio of telegrams from 1960, including one sent from Clarence Campbell to Conn Smythe regarding Richard’s retirement and his availability to other clubs through waivers.
The final two telegrams include one sent from Murray Patrick to the NHL’s Central Registry to confirm Richard’s retirement, along with a telegram also sent to the NHL’s Central Registry from the Bruins’ Walter Brown, stating that Boston waived on Richard. The Richard and Selke signatures have all been executed in blue ballpoint and display beautifully, with light to moderate wear to the documents which includes no unsightly wear or damage.
