Arguably the most patriotic NHL owner in history, Conn Smythe first attempted to enlist with the armed forces during the First World War as a teenager, but was told to come back once he had grown facial hair. Serving as a lieutenant during the great conflict, Smythe was captured by the Germans and served over 14 months as a POW. The Hall of Fame builder would later re-enlist, and organize his own artillery battery during the Second World War. Containing thoroughly interesting content, we have a typed letter signed by Conn Smythe on his personal letterhead. At 7” x 10 ½” and addressed to author Dr Gordon Reid, the July 19, 1979 correspondence has Smythe relating an entertaining war story, with this also appearing in Reid’s work "Poor Bloody Murder", according to our consignor. Smythe has signed the letter in blue ballpoint, with the signature flawless. The letter itself shows just a pair of horizontal fold lines, with the original post marked MLG envelope accompanying.
