Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

The Great One, pictured as a 17-year old rookie in the World Hockey Association on his ultra-desirable rookie card, is always the highlight of a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee ensemble, with Wayne Gretzky’s iconic rookie here examined by PSA, the firm’s EX-MT 6 verdict appearing right-on. Wear (white) at the bottom right corner and less-than-perfect centering are obvious, with an apparent immaculate surface an attribute. Also observed is a slight diamond cut, as well as light touches to the other three corners. The 395 raw representatives are stored in 9-pocket pages/a binder, with pulled key/star/rookie cards and random pulls leading to the following report. Minimal handling and wear is observed with a good majority appearing to mirror or edge the Gretz RC, with EX-MT, EX-MT+ and NM examples dominating, their crispness and impressive surfaces standing out. It appears as though white specks at some bottom corners were the result of insertion into the pages. We’d say EX-MT+ for the Oilers logo/checklist, with all other team checklists also unmarked. The three checklists are however (neatly) marked and otherwise less than EX-MT due to corner dings. The last cards from the playing days of Howe and Hull (both EX-MT), Bossy’s second-year card, legends Dryden and Lafleur and over 50 rookie cards are among the contributors that you’ll be receiving, with a pleasing scratch-free PSA holder aiding the overall eye appeal of the Gretzky RC.
