Honoured with the National Cartoonists Society's Story Comic Strip Award numerous times in the 1970s and 1980s for his continued work on Prince Valiant, John Cullen Murphy began work as an illustrator at age seventeen, drawing boxing cartoons for Madison Square Garden’s publicity department. A popular magazine illustrator throughout the 1940s, Cullen’s work appeared in Liberty, Esquire, Sport, Colliers and other publications. This original artwork by Cullen of legendary Montreal Canadiens superstar Howie Morenz was commissioned for publication in Sport magazine. At approx 9” x 11” (exposed), the well executed painting features a splendidly-depicted Stratford Streak bearing-down on the Bruins Tiny Thompson. The artist has signed over the bottom right, with the one-of-a-kind work displaying beautifully with no condition issues. Set beneath a beige matte, the painting is framed to 16 ½” x 19”, with light wear to the frame to note.
