Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Parkhurst’s likable 1955-56 hockey card issue is always interesting to check out, with this assembly partially hampered by rather serious condition issues – you’ll have to pay attention. More than half of the cards (we spot 54) were obviously trimmed or originally crudely cut (we surmise the former), with a not straight top or bottom edge resulting in examples that measure short. The first three dozen numbered cards are involved but thankfully the blade work stopped momentarily at #37-Rocket Richard and for other (but not all) big name Canadiens, both past and then-present. The Jacques Plante rookie card was spared but a half-inch welt/indentation is present underneath the goalie’s outstretched arm, with a big wax stain and light creasing observed on the back. Still somewhat attractive, it’s joined by Richard (P-F) and fellow Hall of Famers Beliveau, Harvey and Geoffrion (all without creases but with enough wear to drop them a notch or two below VG). As for the other not-trimmed cards, they’re all Canadiens or action scenes, with the exception of 79-Maple Leaf Gardens (P), affected by the same flaws as the Plante RC. Expect a group that averages VG, with 78-The Montreal Forum (P) lesser. We won’t get into all the Maple Leafs and other Habs with rough cuts; they’ll be a technically low grade grab bag, with at least not many obvious creases and otherwise mostly in the G to VG-EX range. **After our first three group shots, cards shown are among those which measure short.
