Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Skating for numerous seasons in the EHL in the late-1960s/early-1970s with Greensboro, Don Burgess made his WHA debut for the Philadelphia Blazers during the inaugural season of 1972-73, and saw action in a total of 446 games spread over parts of seven WHA seasons. This San Diego Mariners jersey was worn by the Point Edward native in 1976-77, his second of two seasons with the club. Rawlings labeling with “48” sizing is affixed to the collar, with no tie-string remaining. Featuring “San Diego” placed diagonally across the chest in individual layered tackle twill letters, “8” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the “Skating Skipper” patch over the right shoulder. “Burgess” is also heat-pressed in white vinyl to the nameplate, and we should note that there is evidence of a former shorter nameplate – with the Mariners notorious for re-using and re-attaching nameplates.
Just light game-use is exhibited on the vintage durene garment, with a few marks visible including a faint board burn on the lower left sleeve, with a team repair over the right elbow.
