An NHL All-Star selection in 2009 while a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, Niklas Backstrom played the majority of his NHL career in Minnesota, and earned the William M Jennings Trophy during his rookie campaign in 2006-07. This photo-matched “Wild Instincts II” mask was worn by the Finnish-born Swede in 2014-15. A Vaughn model by Dominic Malerba (signed and dated on inside) with intact cage, back plate and interior padding, the paint scheme was executed by DaveArt (signed with text on the upper reverse), and features a Wild logo over the forehead and Minnesota winter motif, with “32” over the chin section in stylized numerals. The back plate sports two pairs of initials with a Finnish flag, with “II” handwritten in marker within the mouth guard. It should be noted that two similar masks were made at the same time (Wild Instincts and Wild Instincts II), with minor differences to the paint schemes including height/placement of the trees on each side as well as the graphics along the top and front of the mask. Most game action photos from 2014-15 show Backstrom wearing the "Wild Instincts" mask, but a pair of Getty Images shows him wearing this "Wild Instincts Part II" mask in a November 13, 2014 match. A Vaughn storage/carry bag will accompany the mask.
It should be further noted that near the end of February in 2015, the cages were changed from white to red on both masks. It is unknown if this mask was worn in other games he played during the season (on-ice or as back-up), with the mask most likely seeing use in practices as well. In gorgeous condition showing light game-use, there are a few tiny surface chips visible including over the chin and forehead, with wear and puck marks to the red cage. There is also some minor discolouration to the bottom straps. Getty Images #459184514 (Nov 13, 2014) has been matched to the particularities/placement of the paint job on the top of the helmet (wearing white cage).
