Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Two crease-free vintage cards picturing two of baseball’s greatest “lefties” (hitter and pitcher) lead this gathering, with a 1958 Topps #1 Ted Williams card miscut and otherwise EX. It came out the season after Williams became the oldest player, at 39, to win a batting title, with the reverse mentioning that it was his fifth batting crown. With pleasing centering and EX is Sandy Koufax’s 1960 Topps issue, while rookie card action from the 1980s is led chronologically by Cal Ripken Jr.’s ’82 Donruss RC (EX-MT), followed by two ’84 Topps Don Mattingly RCs (NM+, NM). Rookies from the ’85 Topps set are those of Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens at NM and Kirby Puckett (EX-MT), with Orel Hershiser, Dwight Gooden and Eric Davis rookies also present and joined by an ’87 Topps Jose Canseco card. Five 1991 Upper Deck SP1 cards picturing Michael Jordan in a Chicago White Sox uniform are present (we spot a crease in one) and “book” these days at $60 apiece, with some 20 miscellaneous cards from the ‘90s thrown-in.
