One of the hobby’s most collected teams due to its greatest all-time superstar Wayne Gretzky, any and all Edmonton Oilers jerseys from the 1980s are highly coveted, with rarer and earlier specimens from the club’s time in the WHA especially significant. Adding considerable fuel to the collecting fire, the offered Oilers WHA jersey that hails from the early-1970s was worn during the 1974-75 preseason and for promotional use by legendary HOF netminder Jacques Plante. First donned during the 1973-74 campaign by Jack Norris, no labeling remains, with the vintage durene sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 48. Featuring the classic oil-drop team crest administered with chain-stitched detailing, “30” appears sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Plante” chain-stitched to the affixed nameplate. The jersey was recycled for Plante’s use in 1973-74, and was worn for publicity photos as well as in two preseason games (September 27, 1974 vs Vancouver Blazers - played one period, and September 30, 1974 vs Vancouver Blazers - he cracked a bone in his catching hand). A detailed LOA document will accompany.
We should note evidence a former nameplate with rounded ends (15" long) and remnants of glue from the former nameplate at the former ends, with this replaced with the current nameplate with chain-stitched detailing including a blue border to the letters. These were used in the preseason only and were cast aside when the team received their new jerseys for the start of the regular season. Plante was the only goaltender to wear #30 during the 1974-75 preseason and switched to the #1 for the regular season. Sporting moderate game-use, there is pilling to both the interior and exterior, with fading and minor puckering to the reverse numbers. There is also a large rust coloured stain beneath the reverse numbers more noticeable from the interior, with the “0” heavily reinforced with additional stitching. A team repair is also visible, just above the left reverse hem, with a bit of red paint transfer near the left elbow.
