Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Classic pre-war collectibles here offer a fantastic view of legendary players and their supporting cast who wrote the 1933-34 chapter of the NHL, with other levels of hockey also represented. The picture of the stars who played the Toronto Maple Leafs in the famous Ace Bailey Benefit Game highlights the ensemble, with the looks of Morenz, Joliat, Shore, Cook, Lionel Conacher, "Ching", "Nels", "Hooley", Lester Patrick and others, along with the various uniforms, truly riveting to hockey historians. A tiny tear in the middle of the bottom edge and light bends are to mention, with other examples, printed on quality paper stock, exhibiting no tears and, in most cases, only one noticeable small bend (in the upper left quadrant). There's an interesting pose by the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Black Hawks, with the Detroit Red Wings curiously hailed as "National Hockey League Winners, 1933-34" even though Toronto bettered Detroit by three points in the regular season, one that saw Charlie lead with 32 goals while also winning the scoring title. Joining group shots of the Canadiens, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Americans and Maroons are those of the Can-Am League champion Rhode Island Reds, Allan Cup champion Moncton Hawks (two light peripheral creases) and Memorial Cup champion St. Michael's College of Toronto. A tattered/torn original mailing envelope reveals that 15 cents was the cost of the whole set, said to have been available at sporting goods stores. Oh what a time and oh what a lineup!
