Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Compared favourably to American superstar and contemporary Hobey Baker during his playing career, Dick Irvin was an especially tough and feared competitor, noted for his heavy shot and precise accuracy. Born in Hamilton but learning the game in Winnipeg, Irvin played for a number of clubs before serving as the first captain of the Chicago Black Hawks, and is best remembered for his days behind the Montreal Canadiens bench (1940-55). Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Dick Irvin by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Irvin is masterly depicted, with the artist signing and adding the year (1992) along the bottom right. Double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”, the unique painting is flawless, with light wear to the frame. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
