The first company to produce hockey skates in which the skate blades were permanently attached to the boots, the Bauer Skate Company was founded in 1927 by the Bauer family, owners of the Western Shoe Company, in Kitchener, Ont. The company famously produced skates used by pros including Bobby Hull, with the superstar signing an endorsement deal to advertising for Bauer. In 1994, the parent company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nike. Rarely seen or offered, we have a large and comprehensive collection of Bauer store displays and advertising from the 1960s/70s totaling 15 pieces, with 7 counter-top standees, 6 paper-stock posters and 2 matching banners. There is also an additional set of Bauer placards, with one for each of the 14 NHL teams (1970-72), and two additional advertising posters, one from D&R, the other, Pow-R-Puck.
First, the cardboard standees include 3 in the 14” x 19” range that are each die cut, with one advertising hockey skates, the others, hockey outfits, 2 in the 17” x 22” range including one for Bobby Hull (slightly thinner than the other example), and one sporting the 14 NHL clubs logos (1970-72). This is followed by a matching pair of standees from the late-1960s advertising the company’s famous Supreme models – with a goalie who appears similar to Terry Sawchuk (13 ½” x 15”). The majority of the standees show light to moderate wear but no damage, with the easel intact and unused on each. The thin-stock paper posters/banners are all 12” x 48” and total 6, with 3 matching for the Black Panther line (2 black, one white), one for Bobby Hull, and the other three advertising skates or hockey outfits (there is heavier wear to this group, with a few examples sporting edges tears and clear tape, with just fold lines and some creasing to the Hull specimen). The matching glossy stock banners are from the late-1960s and advertise all 12 teams, with light wear to the pair (12” x 36”). The D&R poster is from the 1960s and advertises their line of hockey gloves (22” x 28”), while the Pow-R-Puck ad features the Leafs Mike Walton, with fold lines, toning and clear tape on the reverse (13” x 13 ½”).
