Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
Artistic renditions of some of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history combine here with food issues for a tasty offering, with the Prudential Life Insurance prints dating back to the 1960s and accompanied by an August 1962 Weekend Magazine that includes a revealing full-page ad about the (14-1/2” x 18”) prints, informing that five new prints will be coming soon, with an offer to order one of the already released works or reserve the ones available in coming months. All twelve prints are present here, along with one of Gordie Howe that was issued later in the decade. Lester Patrick, Rocket Richard, Hull and Geoffrion and the ’62 Maple Leafs’ Stanley Cup championship are paid tribute to in the other hockey-related prints which have been preserved in attractive collectible condition, with some light bends observed on some, along with light edge toning. Football legends Lionel Conacher and Jackie Parker, skater Barbara Ann Scott and sprinter Percy Williams are among the other athletes honored on thick, linen-like paper. ....Meanwhile, Wayne Gretzky and eight of his Edmonton Oilers teammates are depicted on prints issued as part of a Kraft Dinner promotion in the 1980s. On thin cardboard stock, they measure bigger at 16” by 20” and include Messier, Coffey, Fuhr, Kurri, Anderson. Moog and others. There are also smaller prints of Wayne (12” x 16” with toning and 8” by 10” – creased), with standard trading card size cards of Gretzky in original cellophane packaging and, get this, still attached to (the interior of) a flattened-out Kraft Dinner box – very cool. There’s also a complete (81-card) set of cards (includes Gretzky, Patrick Roy, etc.), two Kraft Sports albums to store the cards, two extra Gretzky cards (one from a box, the other from the mail-in offer) and finally an ad for the big charcoal prints and a complete macaroni and cheese box with contents inside. ....Completing the collection are two (80-card) uncut sheets of 1983-84 Vachon cards (have been stored rolled for years and include creasing) and Vancouver Canucks items from an early-‘80s Silverwood Dairies promotion. There’s a cardboard store advertising sign (16” x 24”) picturing the 24 cards available and a three-card panel still inside an original milk bag, revealing how the cards were made available – again, very cool!
