Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Out-earning even the Babe during the Roaring Twenties, Jack Dempsey would set numerous financial and attendance records including the first million-dollar gate, with his $770,000.00 earned for the first Gene Tunney fight in 1926 equating to north of 11 million in 2020 dollars. This attractive original framed photograph of The Manassa Mauler has been hand-tinted. At 19” x 24” and originating from the 1920s with a youthful champ depicted, Dempsey is all smiles in white trunks as he removes his robe, with added hand-tinted details to the photograph including colouring of the robe. “To Jack from Taps” appears over the bottom right, with this notation presumably from the photographer. Set in a vintage wooden frame to full dimensions of 24” x 28 ½”, the photograph appears to show just light wear.
