Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
The oldest continuously operating minor-league hockey franchise in North America and the only AHL franchise in history to have never missed a season, the Providence Red iced their first team in the CAHL in 1926, and have won thirteen Division titles throughout their tenure along with four Calder Cup championships. From their second season in the AHL in 1937-38, we have a mammoth banner celebrating the Reds fourth Division title and first Calder Cup championship. At an especially large 59” x 139” and constructed of bright red wool with a thick black felt sewn border, off-white felt letters have been affixed, reading in full “R.I. Reds – 1937-38 American League Champions – Fountaine League Cups”. Produced by The Nixon Company with their label sewn to the upper reverse and remaining in beautiful displayable condition, when considering the size, material and age, the mere survival of the offered banner should be celebrated.
There is some expected wear to the material and toning to the affixed off-white letters, with a small section torn away along the top border, with this not affecting the text. There is also a tear over the bottom left (see photos).
