Always a hit with collectors, appreciated for their beautiful oversized condition-sensitive images and scarce survival rate, Montreal’s La Presse issued newsprint photos of the greatest hockey stars of the day over a period of five seasons, spanning from 1927-28 to 1931-32, and we offer a complete set of 72. Highlighted by images of legendary superstars Georges Vezina and Howie Morenz, the overwhelming majority are full size at roughly 11” x 17 ½”, escaping the scissored hands of past youth, with a number also still attached to corresponding pages. As an added bonus, a La Presse photo of Maurice Richard from 1946 is also included, along with a La Presse team photo of the Montreal Canadiens from 1939.
The breakdown for the collection by year is as follows, with each listed in the order they were issued; 1927-28 – Morenz, Joliat, Mantha, Lepine, Hainsworth, Gagne, Leduc, Larochelle, Gaudreault, Hart, Langlois, Vezina (large edge tear), Habs, Shore, L. Conacher, Porter and Patterson; 1928-29 – Burke, Stewart, Siebert, Day, Benedict, Dutton, Phillips, Boucher, Ward, Brunet, Boucher, Mondou, F. Cook and Mantha; 1929-30 – Fraser, McCaffrey, Kilrea, Blair, Clancy, Roach, Bourgeault, Belanger, Hitchman, Primeau, Gainor, Thompson, Rivers, Smith, Walsh and Canadiens team photo; 1930-31 – Miller, Gagnon, Somers, Gottselig, Gallagher, Roche, McVicar, Kerr, Roche, Hayes, Huggins, Horner (heavily trimmed), Jackson, C. Conacher, Saint Germain (heavily trimmed) and Goodfellow; 1931-32 – Himes, Couture, Owen, Gardiner, T. Cook, Finnigan, Cockburn and Alexandre. The majority show expected handling wear which includes the odd crease, wrinkle, fold or edge tear, with toning to the group as well. The 1939 Habs team photo is in poor condition, with clear tape added.
