Perhaps best known as the first pro stop for the one and only Wayne Gretzky, the Indianapolis Racers joined the WHA during the league’s third season in 1974-75, with their 1st place finish in the Eastern Division the following year before losing in the Quarter-final the club’s best season. The Racers folded on Dec 15, 1978, after playing just 25 games of the 1978-79 WHA season. This highly desirable Racers jersey hails from circa 1975-76, and was worn by an unknown player. Sporting a Rawlings label with “48” sizing along the collar, a loop-style fight strap has also been utilized on the vintage garment. Featuring a layered multi-coloured tackle twill team crest, “26” appears over the sleeves and verso in white-over-red twill, with no nameplate over the upper reverse (there is evidence of a former nameplate). We should note that Murray Heatley wore #26 in 1975-76 (34 games), with the jersey possible donned by him.
Surviving the intermediate decades in especially pleasing condition, the jersey exhibits moderate game-use, with a few scrapes and marks over the front, with heavy paint transfer marks over each lower sleeve. There is also pilling to the interior.
