Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
Hefty war clubs singularly cut and shaped by skilled woodworkers, the vintage lumber of the turn of the century featured one-piece construction, with inverted ink stamps and paper labels serving as maker’s marks before the advent of modern branding. We have an earlier one-piece stick with paper label remnants, most likely hailing from the 1920s. At just over 44” in length, “Varsity” is stamped to one side of the well-worn blade, with this model name also appearing on traces of the remaining paper label over the handle. A number of makers sported Varsity models during the era including Hespeler, St Mary’s, Lovell and Wan-Gard. This example exhibits heavier wear including tape residue over the blade, with initials carved near the handle.
