Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Hailing from the 1940s and celebrating a rich heritage of Saskatchewan hockey, this lot contains a rare collection of 13 signed small player photos of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Millers circa 1940-41, accompanied by a collection of 18 player photos featuring the Western Canada Senior Hockey League’s Saskatoon Quakers from 1949-50, with 3 examples signed. At just 3” x 5” and featuring smaller images, the circa 1940-41 Millers photos are all on card stock, with each signing in fountain pen beneath his respective image. Signers include Art Somers, Frank Dotten, Butch McDonald, Hughie Bell and others. The glossy stock Quakers photos are approx 4” x 6”, with each having glue residue encompassing the reverse - along with the player’s name handwritten, with the possibility existing that these originate from a master photograph. The signed examples include Cy Rouse, Howie Milford and Chuck McCullough.
The additional Millers signed photo cards include Paul Platz, Elton McFadyen, Roy McBride, Jesse Seaby, “Moose” Sherrith, Roy Allen, “Bus” Bragshaw and two others. The signatures present well with no issues, with light wear to the photos themselves, along with toning (a few show heavier toning). The additional Quakers players include Red Staley, Cy Thomas, Ken Hunter, Alex Kuzina, Billy Johnson, Denny Hudleston, Vic Myles, Billy Mahar, Cliff Dobson, Reg Bentley, Tommy Burlington, Squee Allen, John Sofiak, Art Myers and one other. The photos present well overall with great image quality, with a few sporting heavier wear including creases, with one example (Johnson) torn and repaired with clear tape. We should also note that the Millers photos were dated to circa 1940-41 by the inclusion of Chicago Black Hawk and New York Ranger Art Somers, as Somers’ was only with the club in 1940-41 according to information online. Other players include Frank Dotten who’s listed as being with the Millers in 1941-42, while Butch McDonald was only with the club in 1938-39. This online information may be wrong, as the photos are all matching in style and construction, with the uniforms also all matching, assuring all originate from the same season.
