Available in the Montreal area during the Canadiens’ epic Stanley Cup dynasty in the mid-to-late-1950s, Hygrade Food Products issued a set of six Montreal Royals contest cards, with each inserted into packages of Hygrade Frankfurts. The reverse of each announces that tickets to 200 Royals games will be awarded to those writing the company and explaining in 10 words or less why they love Hygrade Franks. This 1956-57 Hygrade Frankfurt near-complete set is extremely hard to duplicate, with the highly sought after Gerry McNeil card included. At just over 4 ¼” x 5”, each card feature’s a sepia-toned image along with a glossy reverse and rounded corners, with cards present for the aforementioned McNeil, along with Jacques Deslauriers, Cec Hoekstra, Walter Clune and Guy Rousseau. Just Andre Corriveau is needed for completion. The group presents especially well despite the lower technical grades, with each card sporting creasing and minor toning, with some tape residue over the front of the Clune card. There is also some product staining over each reverse, and when considering their original package placement, the cards display much better than one would expect. We should further note that according to the PSA population report, only 9 1956-57 Hygrade Frankfurt cards have been graded to date by the company.
