Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2020
A changing of the guard occurred so to speak within the Montreal Canadiens organization throughout the late-1940s into the early-1950s, with a number of past stars that anchored the Bleu Blanc Rouge throughout the war years such as Toe Blake, Bill Durnan and Kenny Reardon saying goodbye, while young talent including Doug Harvey, Jacques Plante and Jean Beliveau would embark on leading the Habs’ to greatness. This lot contains an especially rare collection of circa 1947-48 postcards totaling nine, highlighted by the inclusion of seven Hall of Fame Members. All black and white three-quarter images with postal reverses, examples are present for HOFers Durnan, Blake, O’Connor, Lach, Reardon, Bouchard and the Rocket, along with Gravelle and Harmon. We cannot stress how utterly rare these early postcards are, with only a few examples handled by us previously.
The Richard exhibits corner and edge wear and a few surface indentations, with light toning over the reverse. The Lach and O’Connor display nicely, with surface wear over the Lach and corner wear to each, with the player’s name handwritten on the reverse of each (the impression left from the writing can be seen through the front of the card). Next, the Blake, Reardon and Harmon all show minor surface lines and corner wear, with heavy toning to the reverse of the Blake postcard. Lastly, the Durnan, Gravelle and Bouchard postcards all sport creases and heavier wear (especially to the Durnan), with moderate toning over each reverse and notations on the Durnan and Bouchard.
