Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
As an answer to the St. Lawrence Starch Company’s popular Bee Hive line of hockey player photos, Crown Brand Starch decided to get in on the action in 1935 with a collection of their own pictures, mounted on beige backings. Some four dozen offered here are headlined by pictures of Hall of Famers Howie Morenz, Aurele Joliat, Toe Blake, Ace Bailey, Roy Worters, Frank Boucher, Babe Siebert and Marty Barry (two different - Red Wings, Canadiens), as well as group shots of the Canadiens, Maroons and others. Condition is admittedly not wonderful, with more than half of the photos re-glued to the backings, the latter with varying degrees of wear that may include creases, with a pin hole through the backing of the Morenz piece to be aware of. Group photos of Father Leveque's Peewee Hockey Club (Canadien and "Six Stars") are scarce/desirable and in VG condition, similar to a 1936-37 Maroons team photo, while a Canadiens group shot from the same year is multi-creased. With significant condition issues and low grade are photos picturing the '34-35 and '37-37 Maroons, as well as the 1936 Canadian Olympic Team. Bonuses are an original Canada Starch mailing envelope and three '38-39 Quaker Oats Photos on card stock. Murph Chamberlain is VG, while low grade are examples of Gordie Drillon (pinhole) and Stew Evans (multiple pinholes).
