Playing in each of Team Canada’s 7 matches and scoring an impressive 5 points, Bob Gainey also collected attractive Inuit soapstone carvings at the 1981 Canada Cup, with the offered collection hailing from the superstar’s personal collection. Totaling 4, we have a pair of figures presented to Gainey at the 1981 Canada Cup including a large and well detailed seal (11” in length) along with a beautiful large bird (9” in length), with each having a small affixed plaque with “Coupe Canada Cup 1981” engraved. The remaining two carvings hail from unknown international hockey series’ in which Gainey competed in during his career, with a small duck (just over 5” in length) and resting Inuit figure (7” in length). The small duck exhibits glue residue over the front from a former affixed plaque. A signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
Each of the carvings exhibit engraved text on the underside including dates of 1981 for the larger bird, 1980 for the small duck, and 1975 for the resting Inuit. The larger bird and resting Inuit figures also sport “Eskimo Art” decals on the underside. There is just light surface wear to each and no damage, with glue residue visible on the large seal, with this originating from either a second affixed plaque or the example over the front was originally moved from this position.
