Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Originally acquired directly from the Carolina Hurricanes Head Equipment Manager Wally Tatomir, we have a helmet that was worn by Jeff O’Neill in multiple seasons from 1999 to 2002, and it’s been photo-matched to the 2001-02 regular season, playoffs and Stanley Cup finals. A CCM model in solid red with Hurricanes stickers on each side, “92” appears over the reverse along with a Hockey Fights Cancer logo and NHL shield crest. A “3” sticker is also affixed to the interior, with this issued to honour fallen player Steve Chaisson, with these originally worn on the lower reverse of the helmet during the 1999-00 NHL season. The sticker was probably important to O’Neill, and he later added it to the interior. Exhibiting heavy wear throughout, with some staining to the interior padding, an LOA will accompany.
Regarding the aforementioned photo-matches, Getty Images #53130957 from March 7, 2002, #526082 from May 13, 2002 (clinching game of the Eastern Conference semifinals) and #634028 from May 28, 2002 (Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals) have all been matched to the scratches in the CCM logo over the forehead section, while Getty Image #706015 from June 6, 2002 (Game 2 Stanley Cup finals), has been matched to the scratches in the CCM logo over the forehead section, as well as to other visible scratches on the helmet.
