Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Extremely rare with very few originally sold and one of the most desirable goaltender accoutrements in the entire hobby, this vintage 1930s leather goal mask was produced by sporting goods giant Spalding, and it’s similar in style to the example worn famously by Hall of Fame netminder Clint Benedict. At approx 7” from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, the molded mask sports a period Spalding logo over the forehead strap, along with the model “NP”. All of the strapping is intact, with one torn, with moderate to heavier wear to the leather throughout. Plante has signed over the right front in ballpoint, adding “Good Luck”, with the signature a bit sloppy, most likely due to the unusual signing surface. This is only the third Spalding leather goal mask we have ever offered, and the first finished in brown leather.
