Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
A relic of the Original Six era and serving as an important stepping stone in the development and evolution of the goal mask, this early specimen by noted maker Lefty Wilson - the fabricator of Terry Sawchuk’s mask - was crafted for Dennis Riggin's use during his time with the Detroit Red Wings organization circa 1962-63, his last season of pro hockey. The mask was later used by his son Pat in minor league matches. Originally purchased directly from the Riggin family, the mask measure’s approx 8” from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, with what appears to be all of the original strapping intact. A plastic mouth guard has been mounted by way of screws to rectify a break over the chin section, with this done while being used by Pat. Tape was also added to the interior contemporarily, to correct an additional break to the right side of the nose. We should also add that it’s unknown if the mask was worn in Red Wings matches by Dennis.
There is some worn flesh-coloured paint visible over the surface, with some discolouration/staining to the interior material, with “Riggen” handwritten and faded over the upper left edge. Along with the aforementioned breaks, the mask shows heavy wear from use, with the tape affixed to the interior considerably aged.
