Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

The holder of ten Art Ross trophies as the NHL’s leading scorer, the most important season as the league’s premier point-getter would definitely be 1989-90 for Wayne Gretzky, with the icon netting not only 142 points in 73 games played, he would also score his milestone 1851st, in an Oct 15th contest against his former Edmonton Oilers. We have a stick used by Wayne during that historic season, and while mislabelled as one of the sticks used in the Oct 15th game, this specimen has been signed by both Gretzky and the man he surpassed for all-time points, Gordie Howe. A Titan TPM2020 model in familiar white with red identifiers, “W. Gretzky” has been stamped over the upper shaft, with a date code along the underside of “103189” and pattern number of “1-002”. Sporting the original black tape on the blade and Wayne’s gripper on the knob, the HOF duo have both signed in black marker on the lower shaft, and the signatures display beautifully.
As mentioned, the stick has been erroneously labeled by Wayne’s dad Walter as one of the 13 sticks used in the Oct 15th milestone game by the later date code (Oct 31st 1989), with handwritten “12” (for 12th of the 13 sticks) along with a small plaque affixed that states “This stick is number 12/13 used by Wayne Gretzky on the night he became hockey’s all time leading scorer, October 15, 1989". The stick itself shows nice use, with wear to the blade and a few marks to the lower shaft. It has also been customized by our consignor, with a small hologram sticker added to the lower shaft along with a code handwritten on the top of the knob.
