Founded in 1872 as the Smith & Hemenway Company Inc, Red Devil Tools was the first maker to offer a "Rotary Paper Cutter", in 1875, with this evolving into the modern glass cutters still used. Capitalizing on the taboo “Red Devil” name beginning in the early-1900s when the founder Landon P. Smith heard a blacksmith remark "those little red devils" after being singed from forge sparks, the company is still recognized as Red Devil today. We have a rare display sign from the circa-1920s, a catalog of merchandise from 1939 - perfect for matching display, along with a 1970s thermometer. At 11 ½” x 11 ½” at the widest points, the pentagon-shaped dual-sided sign features the iconic red devil, with text in the company’s vintage script below, along with “Paint-Up Patch-Up”. The large 8 ½” x 11” catalog feature’s an identical devil logo, with the full line of merchandise offered, lavishly illustrated.
The sign shows its age but displays beautifully, with crazing to the surface, more so over one side, along with edge wear including some loss to the finish on the side with crazing. There are also a few cuts, marks and surface abrasions over each side, with the colours remaining bright and bold. The catalog shows light to moderate wear, with a few small edge creases along with wear to the spine including a small edge tear at the base. The interior pages display nicely, with just a light amount of toning present. The thermometer is plastic, triangular shaped, at 18” in length, 6 ½” wide and raised to 2 ½” in the center. The Red Devil logo and trademark name appear at the top, and it seems to be in working order. It suffers from damage, with a few cracks/breaks to the plastic, repaired over the reverse with masking tape. There are also areas of loss, with plastic chipped away, mostly along the edge, with moderate surface wear also present. Despite the condition issues, the thermometer displays well.
