Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Capitalizing on the fame of the late-19th century Montreal hockey club crowned Stanley Cup champions in both 1899 and 1900, we have an especially rare antique Spalding Shamrock one-piece hockey stick that was produced between 1902 and 1904, with this example possessing a desirable original grooved handle. Only the third example we’ve handled in over 20 years and datable by the silver-stamped Spalding trademark logo inverted on the blade, one previous Shamrock we sold matched this example with identical logo and grooved handle, while the second stick featured a later trademark logo and was produced from about 1904 to 1908, and lacked the grooved handle. At 43 ½” in length and the most expensive stick offered from the famous maker, the Spalding logo is somewhat worn but easily readable over the blade, with nice use exhibited and absolutely no cracks/breaks.
As mentioned, the logo is somewhat worn but readable, with the original dark finish applied to the stick also worn, with moderate to heavy wear to the underside of the blade showing good use. There are also some minor chips to edges along the shaft. The grooved handle is 10” from the top of the shaft, with incised vertical lines that run completely around the shaft. There is also tape residue visible on the blade, with the stick displaying nicely overall. Datable sticks from right after the turn of the century are practically non-existent, especially displayable high-quality examples from the most important and notable makers like Spalding. As noted, this model was the most expensive offered during the era by the company.
