Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Awarded the Military Medal for his service with the 11th Canadian Siege Battery in France during the First World War, HOF member Cooper Smeaton was the NHL’s referee-in-chief from 1917 until 1937, later serving as a Stanley Cup trustee from 1946 until his death in 1978. We have a real photo postcard that pictures 5 members of the Canadian military including Smeaton, with each signing near his respective image. All 5 are pictured in uniform, with each signature administered in fountain pen, with a pair of the signatures gone over, most likely due to a weak nib, along with a third signature that has been slightly traced over. The divided postal reverse has handwritten text, again in fountain pen, including “Taken at London March 21/18” and “Please return photo to Mrs Smeaton at the Sun Life”. The Smeaton signature displays well with a bit of fading, with the other signatures having no issues. There is heavy wear to the surface including numerous wrinkles, with a large horizontal crease along with toning over the reverse. There is also glue and residue remaining from scrapbook removal.
