The Indianapolis Racers, Wayne Gretzky’s first professional team, had their most successful season in the World Hockey Association in 1976-77, when they claimed their only Avco Cup playoff series win. This 1976-77 Racers game-worn jersey with Wilson size 46 tagging in the back of the neck belonged to forward Nick Harbaruk, who was born in Drohiczyn, Poland in the midst of World War II in 1943. A thin white leather fight strap remains tied up in the canvas loop sewn inside the back of the jersey. Game wear includes black marks on the bottom left of the multi-twill navy, blue, red and white Racers crest on the front and marks through the stripes on the stripes on the right sleeve.
“Harbaruk” is spelled out in individual white and red double twill letters on the nameplate on the back. The No. 20 on the back and both sleeves is also white and red double twill. More game wear includes faint stains on the white band on the front of the right shoulder, a thin horizontal board burn on the right rear hem, marks on the left sleeve that are hard to discern in the blue durene fabric as well as the collar, and a diagonal board burn on the left rear tail.
Harbaruk had two goals and two assists for four points in 27 games with Indianapolis in 1976-77, his final WHA season, and one goal and one assist in six games in the 1977 Avco Cup playoffs. He had 89 points (45 goals, 44 assists) in 181 regular season games in three WHA season, all with Indianapolis. He had 120 points (45 goals, 75 assists) in 364 NHL regular season games in five seasons with Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
