The Indianapolis Racers, Wayne Gretzky’s first professional team, began play in the WHA in 1974-75 and were in their fifth season in the rebel league when they folded 25 games into the 1978-79 campaign. Forward Frank Rochon’s 1976-77 Racers game-worn jersey with Wilson size 46 tagging in the neck and a canvas fight strap loop is from Indianapolis’ best WHA season, when they went 36-37-8 for 80 points and swept Cincinnati in the East Division semis for their only playoff series win before losing to Avco Cup champs Quebec in five games in the East final. Game wear includes black marks below the navy, blue, red and white multi-twill team crest on the front and on the sleeves.
More game wear includes pilling on the elbow gussets inside the jersey, a black mark on the right shoulder, diagonal black mark and more black marks on the front tail, a big black mark to the left of the “R” on the nameplate, board burns and small burn holes on the sleeves, a board burn with an unrepaired burn hole on the right rear hem near the hip, and reddish-brown spot stains and dried perspiration stains to the white collar. “Rochon” is spelled out in blue and red double twill individual letters sewn on the nameplate on the back. The No. 15 on the back and both sleeves are also blue and red double twill.
Rochon had 15 goals and 8 assists for 23 points in 57 regular season games for the Racers in 1976-77, and one assist in five playoff games in 1977. He had 131 points (71 goals, 60 assists) in 255 WHA regular season games in four seasons with the Chicago Cougars, Denver Spurs, Ottawa Civics and Indianapolis.
