Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Following its memorable, colorful and historically important 240-card set of 1933 came Goudey’s black and white effort three years later, limited to just 25 subjects. A dandy lineup though with eight men enshrined in Cooperstown, led by Hank Greenberg, Mickey Cochrane and Lefty Gomez. The Greenberg and Gomez examples are VG+, similar to those picturing Paul Waner (HOF) and Frank Crosetti, while rounded corners and surface wear send Cochrane to F. The condition leader at EX+ is Joe Vosmik, with EX representatives being Derringer, Dykes, Hemsley and Werber. Crease-free and VG-EX are Berger, Bordagaray, Brubaker, Coscarart, Martin and Newsom. There’s one VG entry (Higgins), with Chuck Klein (HOF) and Castleman at G. Kiki Cuyler (HOF) and Hildebrand are F, while glue stains and paper loss (front) affect Rick Ferrell (HOF), joined in the P stack by Bonura, Camilli and Harris (HOF), the latter three due to erased pencil writing (front or back). Interesting issue doubled as part of a tabletop card game, with “plays” included on the card backs.
