First elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1899 and taking up the position of lieutenant governor four years later, Warren Harding was elected to the United States Senate after losing the race for governor in 1910, later running for the Republican nomination for president in 1920. Winning a landslide election over Democrat James M. Cox, Harding would serve as the 29th President of the United States, in office from March 4, 1921 to August 2, 1923. We have a pair of signed calling cards, with an example from Harding along with a card signed by First Lady Florence Kling Harding. At approx 2 ¾” x 4 ¼”, “White House Washington” appears over the upper right on the Harding-signed card, with a date stamp of “Sept 21 1921” over both the front and reverse, with the President adding a beautiful fountain pen signature that remains dark. The First Lady scripting is on a 4” x 6 ½” card with White House woodcut image, with the bold fountain pen signature accompanied by a personalization along with “most cordial good wishes”. The Harding signed card has toning at each corner as well as at the base, with two areas of glue residue over the reverse, most likely from prior scrapbook insertion. The First Lady card remains in beautiful condition, with just a few minor and unobtrusive creases. Harding would pass from a heart attack while on a speaking tour in 1923, at age 57. An LOA from JSA will accompany.
