Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

A smiling and slinging Johnny Unitas appears on his coveted 1957 Topps rookie card, issued after the young quarterback had played his first pro season with the Baltimore Colts. The reverse of card #138 refers, in both the text and the cartoon, to Pittsburgh-born Johnny U. joining the Colts after being cut/released by the Steelers, while also informing that his running passes "are tough to stop". With pleasing, close-to-perfect centering, this example received a mark of EX-MT 6 at PSA and joins the RCs of Bart Starr and Paul Hornung as the keys to the '57 Topps set. The NFL's most valuable player in 1959, '64 and '67, Unitas' record of throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games (from 1956 to 1960), stood for over half a century until Drew Brees bettered it in 2012. Consistently listed as one of the NFL's greatest players of all time, the University of Louisville Cardinal grad is ready to contribute to your first-rate quarterback/rookie card stash.
We should note some residue along with a few scratches over the front of the PSA holder.
